4-quadrant operation

The operating range of the HSA series is shown in the figure on the right, and it can operate in 4 quadrants.
Regardless of the positive or negative output voltage, current can be sourced or sunk.
When an AC voltage is applied to a load containing (including) capacitance or inductance, current will flow back from the load side.
In such cases, a general power supply or amplifier may not be able to drive the load.
The HSA series' 4-quadrant output capability allows it to drive both capacitive loads such as piezoelectric elements and inductive loads such as solenoids.

4-quadrant operation and capacitive / inductive loads

When AC voltage is applied to capacitive / inductive loads, the AC current of these loads has a 90° phase difference from the applied AC voltage, but if the instantaneous values of voltage and current are plotted on a 4-quadrant graph, they pass through all 4 quadrants. When AC is applied to a capacitor or inductor in this way, a power supply capable of 4-quadrant operation is essential.
On the other hand, general DC power supplies can only drive in the first and third quadrants of the coordinate diagram, so they are only suitable for driving resistive loads.

High-speed response, wide band from DC to 1 MHz

Thanks to high speed and high slew rate, high-speed reciprocating phenomena and transient responses are fully reproduced, with excellent step response.
The HSA series can output both DC and AC. Because it can also output DC, it can stably output positive/negative asymmetric signals or AC signals superimposed on DC.

Low output impedance

Due to the influence of the power supply output impedance, capacitive or inductive loads experience a delay in rise time.
The HSA series maintains low output impedance across the full band, minimizing the voltage drop that occurs when a load is connected, thereby delivering its high-speed performance.

Impact on rise time

In the figure below, if the resistance of the power supply output impedance is R, the inductance is L, and the load capacitance is C, the rise speed becomes slower because only R is present.
When L = 0, it takes CxR (seconds) to rise to 60% of the final value.

Covers diverse applications with convenient performance

Gain setting

Fixed gain ×1, ×10, ×20, ×50
Variable gain x1-x3 (fine adjustment available)
Continuous setting is possible in combination.
When set to gain ×1, the power supply directly outputs the voltage level set by the signal generator.

#

Output polarity switching

Using the front panel [INVT] key, you can switch between in-phase amplification and inverted amplification.
By connecting two HSA series units and using the inverted output function, the output voltage can be doubled. (Balanced connection)

#

The output of the signal generator is split and input to HSAⒶ and HSAⒷ respectively. For HSAⒶ, HSAⒷ is an inverted output. The load must be isolated from ground potential and the signal source. Also called BTL (Balanced TransformerLess) connection.

Output DC bias setting

Superimpose DC bias voltage (up to ±75V) on the output voltage (set via 10-turn potentiometer)
For DC power supply fluctuation testing of loads, an AC signal can be superimposed on a DC voltage.

#

Use the HSA's DC bias to set the load's rated supply voltage, and superimpose the signal generator's AC output.
Sweeping of AC output and superimposition of white noise are also possible.

Protection Functions

Equipped with protection functions against abnormal phenomena, capable of handling overload, overvoltage, internal power supply abnormality, internal temperature abnormality, cooling fan abnormality, etc.
When an abnormality is detected, the output is shut off, and the overload indicator LED or error indicator LED lights up.
If the abnormality persists, no operation other than turning off the power is possible (shutdown mode)

Capacitors MLCC

Demand for multilayer ceramic chip capacitors (MLCC) is growing rapidly for mobile devices, automotive equipment, and industrial equipment. In addition, they are becoming smaller in size and larger in capacitance.
The capacitance of MLCC is affected by frequency and voltage. Typically, an impedance analyzer is used to sweep the frequency while applying DC voltage and AC current to evaluate their characteristics.

CapacitorMotors Ultrasonic motors

Combined with a signal generator, frequency, phase, and amplitude can be adjusted to perform motor drive tests.
High-speed, wide-band stable voltage output is best suited to motor drive test conditions.
Recently, ultrasonic motors that require drive frequencies of 100kHz or higher have also been developed.

● Applications
Autofocus for SLR cameras, scanning electron microscopes, semiconductor manufacturing equipment, micromachine manufacturing equipment.

CapacitorMagnetic materials Powder cores, ferrite cores

For magnetic materials, new materials that do not contain rare earth elements are also being actively developed.
Among them, powder cores have excellent magnetic properties in the high-frequency band above 1kHz. They are manufactured by selecting powders with good shape flexibility and high productivity and molding them.
Powder cores are also being actively considered for use in various components.
The HSA series is used in B-H curve measurement to evaluate magnetic materials.

CapacitorPiezoelectric elements Piezoelectric actuators, piezoelectric transformers

When driving piezoelectric elements, the low output impedance characteristics of the HSA series provide good step response even for large-capacitance piezoelectric elements.
Combined with an impedance characteristic analyzer, resonance characteristics under actual driving conditions can also be tested.

● Applications
Ultrasonic cleaning (parts, semiconductors)
Ultrasonic processing (wire bonders, plastic wells, atomizers, etc.)
Medical equipment (ultrasonic diagnostic equipment, catheters, electric scalpels, etc.)
Underwater sensors
Ultrasonic sensors
Small micro actuators (cantilevers), etc.

CapacitorSmartphone touch panels

Verifying equipment failures caused by external noise

Mobile devices such as smartphones may be affected by common-mode noise or noise from AC adapters and malfunction.
In addition, capacitive touch panels widely used in factories use minute changes in capacitance as signals, but surrounding noise may cause erroneous operation. To verify such failures, tests are performed by superimposing AC on DC.
The HSA series can superimpose harmonic noise simulation signals over a wide band up to 1MHz.

■ Example test waveform
#
By setting the gain to x1, the low voltage output generated by the signal generator can be used.
The output noise is below 3.68Vrms, making it suitable for low-noise electronic circuit testing.

CapacitorAutomotive electronic components

Higher voltage for EV power supplies

With the worldwide development of electric vehicles, EV development is becoming increasingly active. Automotive power supplies are becoming higher in voltage, and automotive components and electronic parts are required to have power fluctuations under high voltage.
In some cases, high-frequency voltage fluctuation tests require high-speed bipolar power supplies.

CapacitorDielectrophoresis (DEP)

Cell separation, detection of microorganisms and viruses

Dielectrophoresis is a phenomenon in which particles migrate due to the particles and the surrounding medium in a non-uniform electric field. It is often applied to the measurement of biomolecules.
Typically, cases where a high AC voltage of around 1MHz is applied are common.
Bacterial detection methods combining dielectrophoresis and impedance measurement are also being actively researched.
